But the Asus router doesn't have a cool LCD screen...

Too bad the Sheevaplug doesn't have some kind of display output.

I've been trying to get a network status meter going. Measure the ping time to various servers and the outside internet, rank the response time and if it's too high (or dosen't respond at all) then it will start chirping.

I totally agree that the ybox2 dosen't have enough widgets. I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around SPIN code but it makes me a sad panda :(.

we could also try a networked drive space meter (is the SMB protocol too hard for spin?)

i think a server meter is a really good idea! start with that, then move up to netwokred storage
i always suggest the SPIN tutorial from parallax
spin is...interesting and hard to learn for people who already know how to program!
