Wave shield arduino. Reads SD but no audio

Post by jbendes »

Im running the test sketch used with the wavehc library and te serial port outputs that the arduino is reading data from the sd chip and then plays it but no audio comes from the speaker, the headphone jack, or any pin on any component. I've checked the solder joints and all the components are in the right spots but still no audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Post some clear photos of the front & back of the board. We'll have a look for any assembly problems.

I soldered in wires instead of using the headers because im planning on using it with an arduino pro. But right not im using it with the duemilanove 328

Clip those leads close to the board. You are likely to short something out like that.
The top pic is a little dark. Double-check the orientation of the op-amp.

That can cause problems too. Hookup wire doesn't make as reliable contact as a header pin.

All chips are oriented correctly. What is the op-amp? Is it definitely a soldering problem?

What is the op-amp?
The Op-Amp is IC3 - the 8-pin DIP located closest to the output jack. It amplifies the analog signal so that it is strong enough to drive the speaker.
Is it definitely a soldering problem?
The vast majority of WaveShield problems are traced to soldering problems or incorrectly placed components. There is the occasional SD card problem, but you have that part working already.

So my best bet would be to resolder everything? Also, is there any way to buy an already made board? For more money?

Check the soldering tutorials. There will be tips on technique and photos of both good & bad joints. Touch up anything that looks suspicious. Also, since you are not using the headers, triple check all your wiring to the Arduino.

Adafruit doesn't sell them that way, but you might find someone on the forums willing to build & test one for you. Maybe post it on the Jobs board?

there is a split ground, connect the two ground pins together!

its good you put it there, but we really do suggest plugging it into an arduino, that way you know at least its not some other wiring issue. also, as arduwino suggested, your solder joints need rework. check our soldering tutorials for how they should look.

The kit is almost certainly fine, its an assembly issue. a reminder, we do not offer phone support - tech support is only offered in the forum. :D

ive checked all the solder joints, the picture isnt the best quality. But i am plugging it into an arduino. I have soldered on the headers and its going straight into the arduino. Here is the new board.

its tough to see, we need a clearer photo to really get a look at the solder joints
