Motor shield instructions misleading - check capacitors!

Post by gperks »

I just received this kit, looks good. However the instructions are misleading (and so I made it wrong!)

Ref: capacitor instructions on http://www.ladyada.net/make/mshield/solder.html.

The photos show BLUE 100uF capacitors, and BLACK 47uF capacitors. However the kit has the capacitor colors reversed!! I soldered in two blue capacitors (following the pictures) before realizing I needed to solder the black ones.

My kit arrived with BLUE 47uF and BLACK 100uF capacitors - the opposite of those in the photos.

Can you please update the instructions so people check the actual capacitance and don't just go by the photos? Better yet, update the photos to match the kits.

Not sure I can rescue my shield without breaking it :(

Capacitor colors may vary between shipments from suppliers. The instructions do identify them by value, not color.

You should be able to remove and re-solder these.
If you have solder-wick or a solder-sucker they will help, but it can be done with just your soldering iron.
  • Heat oneof the leads.
When the solder melts, (gently!) rock the component away from the heated side.
Then heat the other lead and rock the other way.
Repeat this until both leads are free.

Ditto for me - I followed the picture and put the capacitors in the wrong place...

1) The schematic shows no 47uF capacitors (all capacitors are shown as either 100uF or 0.1uF). Yet my kit came with two 47uF capacitors! Do
these go into C7 & C8 slots?

Yes, the parts list and assembly instructions are up-to-date:
C1, C3 & C5 are 100uF.
C7 & C8 are 47uF.
