Adafruit Motor Shield

Post by JohnBaloo »

Hi,
Newbie here I have somehow managed to fry the L293 chip on my motor shield (M1 & M2 ) can I still use the
board M3 & M4 the LED still lights up on the board or do I have to replace the L293 ( problems getting hold of one
where I live in England).
Look forward to hearing from someone.
Thanks
John

You can use M3-M4. Or just swap the L293 chips so you don't have to change any code.

If you fry another one, you might consider piggy-backing two of them to increase the current handling capacity. I'm sure Maplin would have the chips in stock.

Thanks for the quick replies, Maplins dont stock L293's, would it be OK to use L298N's if I replaced
both of them.
And one last question on the Adafruit motor shield there are 5 positions on the cable terminal if I have a 4 wire bipolar
stepper do I leave the middle one free M1/M2.
Thanks
John

The L298 is a different pinout and requires some external circuitry. The SN754410 has the same pinout and is a good substitute for most applications.

For a 4-wire bipolar, you can ignore the center terminal.
