what motors for arduino motor shield

Post by littleheadyu »

Hello All,

I got the Arduino UNO and the adafruit motor shield.
Unfortunately the motors I got for my Pololu wheels http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1433 are very tiny...
Here is the url for the motors http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1100
I didn't notice that they were so tiny when I ordered them... They won't work with those board I'm going to put on the chassis.

Now I have to order different motors. But the current this motor shield allows is not big, 600mA for each DC motor. I also have to make sure that the shaft could fit the pololu wheels.
I found this one http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/990 which looks bigger, but the stall current goes to 800mA. I looked into several websites and did not find any other motor that has a reasonable size and draws not much current...
Any suggestion will be highly appreciated!

Yuping

For more current, it is possible to 'piggyback' two L293 chips to get more power. Just solder another L293 chip on top of the first one. It will handle 1A or more that way.

Thanks Arduwino!!
I'll purchase more L293s. Can I solder more than 2 L293s on top of the original one? Is there a limit? Most of the bigger motors I checked have stall current above 3A...

You can stack more than 2, but there are diminshing returns. I have run 2A motors with 2x SN754410's (a pin compatible chip) and heat sinks. 3A is stretching things a bit.

OK, thanks a lot for helping!
I guess I'll try my current motors first.
