Piggybacking Adafruit Motor/Stepper/Servo Shield?

Post by suncitydave »

I just learned about the Arduino Mega 2560! Wow!

If I want to control four bi-polar stepper motors, not two, can the "Adafruit Motor/Stepper/Servo Shield for Arduino kit - v1.0" be piggybacked? Or is there an easier way to control all four?

What's an inexpensive source for stepper motors?

Thanks very much for your help.

The short answer is yes. Read carefully because there are a few limitations, but on the whole it is a clever and useful solution: http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.ph ... 0&p=115344

These are nice little motors at a reasonable price. Very precise at 200 steps/rev, and the drive characteristics are well matched to the shield: http://www.adafruit.com/products/324
There are also many steppers that can be had for free from discarded printers. Although sometimes it is hard to find specs for them.
The shield is great for experimenting with 'found' motors. But I always keep a tube of spare L293D's around just in case.
