EM-406a startup time

Post by desto »

Hello, I am new here.
I have been struggling getting data from an EM-406a and was wondering if it is me, or do I have a bad EM-406a.

The Setup:
USB FTDI TTL-232 cable connecting my PC with the GPS shield which is fitted with an EM-406a.
Using a terminal emulator, I am able to connect to the EM-406a and recieve data from it.

The troulbe is, it takes about 30 minutes to see any satalites are report co-ordinates.

Once it sees some satalites, all is better.
I was hoping for a faster startup time than this.
The datasheets says 42 second Cold Start.

I suspect the long startup time is due me relying on my window (from inside)???

If I power down the unit, wait five minutes, and power it up, it starts reporting co-ordinates almost immediately.
If I power down the unit over night (about 8 hours), it takes a great deal of time to start reporting co-ordinates.
How long can the EM-406a be powered off befor it has trouble working?

Any help? What should I expect?

That can certainly be a factor. It will have an easier time acquiring satellite signals with a clear view of the open sky.
