Data Logging Shield Problems

Post by geraldar »

I have build the Data Logging Shield.
I tested out the clock, per the "Use It!" directions, and all was well.
I tried to test out the SD card, using the CardInfo Sketch. I changed the Chipset to 10. I keep getting the message:
Initializing SD card...initialization failed. Things to check:
* is a card is inserted?
* Is your wiring correct?
* did you change the chipSelect pin to match your shield or module?

However, when I tried a brand new card out of the package, I got a message that said that the wiring was correct and that a card was detected it was an SD2 card and needed to be formatted. After formatting, I get the "initialization failed message".

What do I do now?

Thanks.

Post photos of the front & back of the board and we will look for any assembly issues.

Looks like all the parts are in the right places. The back-side photo is too fuzzy to see much. Soldering on the front-side looks mostly pretty good. Some of the digital pin headers look a bit solder-starved. Pin 8 on the SD card looks a little suspicious. Take a close look and re-heat it if the solder has not flowed well onto the pin.

How did you format the card? Are you able to read and write it from your computer? What kind of computer are you using?

I will revisit the solders.

I have tried 2 SD cards (both 2 GB) and 1 SDHC card (4 GB) with the shield. I formatted each on a Mac and then on a Windows machine, using Disk Utility and the formatting functions, respectively. On my Mac and Windows machine I can "see" the cards and move data on and off them.

Formatting on a MAC can cause problems. Here is a (fairly technical) explanation from the author of the library:

This is his recommendation for formatting cards:
