Amp stacking on wave shield. No change?

Post by ghostpuppy »

I'm stacking an amp on the wave shield as suggested on the talking pumpkin tutorial (shown in this pic http://www.ladyada.net/images/pumpkin/amppiggy_t.jpg )

There is no boosted sound to report of though. I tried it on a couple different small 8 ohm speakers.
Has anyone tried this and if so do all 8 pins get soldered (as I assume they do).
Not sure what I could be screwing up here.
I'm having a bad week.

Also I'm just noticing in the tutorial the wave shield shown is the older version.

Could there be a board issue on the current version that is somehow causing the no gain issue? I kind of doubt this is the culprit but just wanted to throw it out there.

Yes, you solder all 8 pins. The boost is not going to be earthshaking. Hearing response is logarithmic. Twice the power should give you about 3db more sound, which is typically the minimum difference the human ear can distinguish.

Ohhhhh I see.

When I read in the tutorial "If you want a power boost, you can 'piggyback' another amplifier chip (TS922) on top of the existing one. This will approximately double the maximum volume", I took that as meaning the db level would be double the single amp option.

Looks like a small amp kit will be needed to give me the boost needed here.

Thanks for straightening that out!
