GPS Shield Question

Post by brantel »

I am wanting to build a NMEA data logger that will simply log all the NMEA data flowing out of a portable GPS.

I know I need a RS232 to TTL adaptor.

Can I use the GPS shield to accomplish this task? Can I feed the GPS shield with the output from the TTL adaptor to log the NMEA data comming out of the GPS?

There is a reason why I want to use an external portable GPS rather than one of the TTL component GPS modules that are available.

The GPS runs at 5hz update rate and the baud rate is 9600.

You should be able to interface it with an RS-232 to TTL converter. One possible complication would be if your device uses flow-control on the serial interface. But most do not these days.

No flow control required. The GPS will just sit there and spit out NMEA data. The GPS has a 5hz update rate but I do not think it sends out sentences that fast.
