Ok, on the card it says "for SPI close SEL0 and SEL1"
so is this card needing SPI?

also the red light is just steady (BUSY) and doesnt blink except for when program is loading....

The card defaults to I2C. Are you using the I2C versions of the library? We don't recommend using SPI with the shield, but if you want to, then yes, you have to bridge those solder jumpers.
