What Adapter should I get? Nema-17 12v 350mA stepper.

Post by robbobfrh84 »

Hey there,

I'm pretty much new to all aspects in this world, ultimately attempting to build a small hobby CNC router.

I currently have.....

- adafruit motor shield v2
- Arduino Uno
- 12v Nema-17 12v 350mA bipolar https://www.adafruit.com/product/324
- multimeter
- 12v "AD adapter"

My question is...

What is the ideal adapter to power my steppers?

I may have already made a big mistake, but I need to get the right adapter regardless If i need to start over.

My big issues is I can't figure out if i need an "AC adapter", an "AC/DC adapter", a "DC adapter" or what. I'm getting a big confused of the difference, and which one this stepper needs and why. Looks like this motor calls for 12v with a 350mA current. I do already have a 12v 300mA "AC adapter" http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=3875402.
Thanks!

AC will not work. You need a 12V DC adapter with at least 700mA. https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about-stepper-motors/faq

This one would be perfect: https://www.adafruit.com/products/798

Alright! Thanks for that info, now i know that the current phase needs to be at least twice the current phase of my motor(two phases at once), understand where you got that 700mA from now.

I actually already have this regulated, filtered, Rated 3-12VDC, 1A output adapter labled "AC-to-DC Power adapter"... Would this work? Didn't want to use it because I thought 1A would be too much for this motor, but slowly understanding that very BASIC aspects of electronics.

Am I still barking up the wrong tree with this adapter?

Thanks for your help, again Bill!

Yes. That one should work. Most adjustable adapters are not very powerful, but that one has 1A which will be plenty for your motor.
