xbee adaptor kit header

Post by mvl »

Hi,

First post here. I just put together the xbee adaptor kit, which has some nice, low-profile female headers that the xbee fits into -- or it _did_ fit, until I was done soldering the headers onto the board. Now it won't go in all the way (the xbee sits in at an angle, not all the way in). I'm thinking that maybe too much heat was applied, and/or solder got up in the header plugs from the back? Maybe the plastic melted? It looks fine from the outside, but Xbee doesn't fit so...

Has anyone had this experience and come up with a solution/fix for this kind of thing (since I don't have any of those low-profile headers around, I can't replace them.)

Thank you!

tough to fix. you can try using wick or a solder sucker. check each header pin with a sewing needle to see which one is wonky

Yes, it's very easy for solder to 'wick' up into the header. I had that happen on one pin on one of the adapters I built. Fortunately mine wasn't bad enough to cause problems.

Is there a part number of those headers? My local supplier doesn't carry them.

I have a similar problem that the support folks at ADAFRUIT wanted me to post in the forums.

I did not exactly follow the assembly directions: I did not tack the corner pins of the 10 pin headers in and then remove the XBEE module - the module remained in as I soldered all 20 pins!

As a result, one of the 3 shields that I build now has a soldered-ion XBEE module (only a few pins on one of the 10 pin connector) that I cannot extract.

Can I return this to ADAFRUIT for them to repair/replace for me?

Thanks.

Joe

we don't do any mail-in repairs.
you will have to fix it yourself! however its not -too- bad
try to use wick or a solder sucker?
or keep the xbee in the socket and use it with that adapter only?
