XBee Communication Materials Between Computer & Arduino?

Post by smilinggoat1 »

Hey all,
I'm just doing a quick check before I spend a bunch of money on the wrong materials. ;)

I'm currently sending lots of rapid binary (on/off) signals to my Arduino via USB, but I want to make the communication wireless. So far I believe I need
  • 1 USB -> FTDI cable (USB TTL-232)
  • 2 XBee Adapter Kits
  • 2 XBee Modules
  • 1 Power supply
With respect to the power supply, the Arduino is decoupled from the hardware it's controlling, so I'll only be powering the actual Arduino and XBee themselves. Is a 9V battery enough?

I know I could do it without the adapter kits, as well, but I'm looking for simple.

What's the procedure for wiring up Ladyada's XBee Adapter to the Arduino? Would I be better off with Sparkfun's XBee Shield?

Any guidance would be great! Cheers!

If you plan for this to run for more than an hour or so don't use a 9v battery. you're wasting 4v at the regulator and they don't have much capacity to start with. Use 4 AA, C or D cells.

you can easily connect the adapter in the adafruit shop
look at http://www.ladyada.net/make/xbee/ for some example wiring diagrams
