What are you using for an external power source? Did you move the power selection jumper on the Boarduino from "usb" to "ext"?when I move the SENDER away from the Laptop, and power it with an external source, it no longer transmits.

Just to let you know that I have the PIR system working with the Boarduino powered by a 9V battery. The previously-tried 5V mains supply evidently wasn't enough to power transmission.
It doesn't seem to matter whether Serial or XBSerial is used - although presumably mixing them in the same sketch can get them confused?

Not sure how that is possible. Hardware Serial talks on pins 0 & 1. The SoftwareSerial port you have defined for the XBee talks on pins 2 & 3.It doesn't seem to matter whether Serial or XBSerial is used - although presumably mixing them in the same sketch can get them confused?
