Xbee bricked (Series 1) SensorMote project

Post by jjdeprisco »

I purchased the tweet a watt package, mainly just to get the Xbee series 1 units for working through a Distributed Network Data book.

All was good, and I have a video of a successful test, but suddenly one Xbee has died.

I am unable to connect to one of the Xbees at all, on Mac or PC. I have all of the drivers installed and - as you can see - DID have this working. It appears my Xbee is "bricked" - so now what?

Many hours into this project, so hope someone can help.

More on this project can be found here:

You might try the Digi forum (Digi makes the XBees). They can show you some procedures to 'un-brick' the module.

I have tried this several times:

All I have is the Adafruit XBee adapter - not a dev board, so all of the other instructions I've found (including the DIgi forum) so far haven't helped. Spent many hours on this and pretty frustrated - especially after the project DID work. Do you have any other recommendations?

Just have a green blinking light, and no serial communication. Also, in terms of which Xbee firmware to use, which selection should I be making from the available list for an Xbee Series 1?? None of the numbers on the back of the Xbee correspond exactly to the list in X-CTU. But that's a moot point until I can get some serial communication happening here.

Have you tried swapping XBee modules to determine whether it is the module itself or the adapter?

The most recent version of the Series 1 firmware is 8.x.1.7 from 12/07/2006. That's more than 6 years old, so it has been stable for a good long time.

Yes, actually I have already determined the adapter is fine. It's the Xbee for sure. And since there is no serial communication happening with it, I can not update the firmware to even an older more stable one.

What's the return policy on these, or am I SOL? Does Digi exchange them?
