Did i destroy my XBees and/or adapters with a firmware update using X-CTU

Post by mzeile_de »

Dear Support Team,

i bought two XBees 1, two XBee adapters (v1.1), an an FTDI cable (1 x USB FTDI TTL-232 cable (TTL-232R 3.3V)) from Adafruit.
(order 273942, from Sunday 28 April 2013)

A friend of mine soldered the XBee adapters.

I connected one adapter+xbee with the FTDI-Cable to my USB slot. The green LED started to blink.
Then i started the X-CTU software and tried to do a firmware update. At that time i thought, this might by a good idea.
While the progress bar from X-CTU was shown the green LED went out and an error occurred in X-CTU saying the update failed.
Now X-CTU says, that there is no more XBee connected. ('Can't connect to the modem.')

Then i did exactly the same steps with the other adapter/XBee. (stupid idea :?)
Exactly the same thing happened.

I tried to connect the FTID cable with the adapter+xbee to another usb slot. The green light is still dead. And X-CTU is still saying there is no XBee connected.

Then i tried to connect the adapter/XBee to a macbook computer using CoolTerm. CoolTerm can't connect to the Bee. (The FTDI cable is available in CoolTerm after i installed the correct driver, but the 'xxx' or any AT command is failing.)
The green leds are also dead when connected to the macbook.

What happened while X-CTU tried to do the firmware update with FTDI cable with X-CTU?
The FTDI cable is recommended on the adafruit side together with XBee.
Did i kill the adapter or the XBee? Or both?
If it's the adapter, is there a way to fix it? Replace some parts.

Please help

That's a bigger XBee problem than we are equipped to deal with.

I think you should try your question over at the Digi XBee Forums first. I'm sure there must be a way to re-load the firmware.

Hello adafruit_sport_rich,

i did this:

http://www.digi.com/wiki/developer/inde ... ee_reflash

with one change:
Instead of
"Without resetting or power cycling the XBee go to the Modem Config Tab"
I went to the Modem Config Tab, connected the GND with the RES hole on the bottom of the adapter, unplugged the adapter from the FTDI cable and replugged the adapter in the FTDI cable.
=>
The X-CTU started to load the firmware and now the red LED is blinken again and i can send AT commands with CoolTerm. :D

Thanks for pointing me to digi.com
