I searched around and I couldn't quite find a solution (this is pretty close to my problem: http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.ph ... re#p137901).
I have two xbee S1 chips, two v 1.1 adafruit adapters and the recommended FTDI cable. While working with X-CTU and the one adapter, I have full functionality with the xbees and can update firmware without issues. With the other adapter, however, X-CTU recognizes that the xbee unit has been connected to the computer and can read the saved settings on the xbees to tell them apart, but for whatever reason it cannot update the firmware. Every time I try, the following windows appear in the order shown: http://imgur.com/a/2SDPc.
I've tried shorting RST to ground when the second box appears, but this does not help. After I click cancel, the third window appears. This happens every time.
I don't know if this will affect the functionality of the simple, two-node network I hope to make, but I'd prefer to have everything in tip top shape before setting this network up. Any ideas what might be wrong with this specific adapter? All the pins and components appear to be fully soldered, possibly a bit overly-so after I read that poor connections might have been causing this (it didn't help, obviously).

Can you post clear pictures of both sides of the adapter you're having trouble with?

Sorry about the late reply, I had to find a camera that was halfway decent at macro shots: http://imgur.com/a/FNgNF.

Very strange. We can replace the adapter. Please email [email protected] with a link to this thread
