Single Leg not lit on Ice Cube Clock

Post by tlugo123 »

I finished the Ice Cube Clock kit and the center 'leg' is not lit (see photo). Any suggestions on where to start? All solder joints are normal. What should the voltage be at that leg input?
Any help would be appreciated.

That would be the 'g' segment which is pin 18 on J1 and 17 on J2 (look at VFD Tube and VFD Driver on http://www.ladyada.net/make/icetube/design.html). One way to test would be to remove the power, wait for the boost converter to discharge, i.e. no voltage on pin 1 of the driver chip (IC2 -MAX6921). Then measure the continuity between pin 6 of the driver chip and pin 17 of JP2 and then to its corresponding lead on the VFD. If its open, then you have a problem between the driver and tube, if not then it could be a bad driver chip or tube.

its almost certainly a cold solder joint. we test all the tubes.
