No beep in second test

Post by greyloki »

Hey folks,

I'd recently decided to kick my electronics learning up a gear - this was helped by my girly buying me an Ice Tube Clock kit for Christmas, but it seems there could be a problem with it. I have all of the components, and was following the assembly guide ( http://www.ladyada.net/make/icetube/solder.html ), however when i'd placed R1, SPK and IC1 and performed the 'startup beep test', I had no beep(!).

All the tests (well, the 5V regulator test) checked out, all the soldering on the back was functional (though certainly not pretty... :), everything seemed to be oriented correctly, so I busted out my multi and tested the resistor R1 directly, and it seems to be reading erratically or not at all - definitely not the 270k(+/-5%) it should be. Would the fact that it's currently 'in situ' (and thus attached through traces to other components, etc) affect a multimeter result like this? Still pretty new to this kind of thing, so any help or other 'have you checked's would be very welcome :)

Thanks for any help you can give.

~Loki

PS: I'm going into electronics with a view to ultimately creating my own audio gear (compressors, EQs, small mixers, synthesizers, etc). I've been learning (slowly :) from Horowitz and Hill's 'The Art of Electronics' (http://www.amazon.com/Art-Electronics-P ... 0521370957), but I was wondering if you guys knew of any resources (analogue or digital) that provide a more audio-centric learning experience?

Haha, oops!

Here's a (~1.3MB) picture of the top:

And a similarly-sized picture of the bottom:

As an interesting aside, macro photography is harder than you'd think :D

Well, for starters, D2 is backwards...

That's all I noticed.

Horowitz and Hill's 'The Art of Electronics'
That's a good book, it is what I used in my electronics class. I have actually been planning on getting it out and starting to go through it again.

Astonishing - somewhere between me carefully checking the diode was the right way around, and me actually putting it in place, I managed to rotate it through 180 degrees... Oh, the shame!

After that, everything was plain sailing, and my clock is now sitting with pride of place on my bedside table - loving that there's a region function for us non-USAnians, too!

Thanks for your help :)

Though while i'm here, has anybody had any thoughts on audio-centric electronics learning? :D
