I've had a naked Ice Tube sitting on the bench for the better part of a year now. I thought it was about time I made a proper case for it.

I came across this pair hand-shaped cast-steel drawer-pulls while searching for hardware for one of my furniture projects. I thought they were just the right size to hold the Ice Tube. I grabbed some hardwood scraps from the cut-off bin and did some 'sketching' with the band-saw.

The hard maple is leftover from a chair project and walnut was salvaged from a tree that came down in my sister's yard.

I had to solder extended insulated leads to the VFD tube so I could route them behind the walnut disc to the circuit boards in the central column. The electronics are accessible via the back cover, which is held on with rare-earth magnets.

Here it is next to it's cousin: The Monopodal Monochron.

Adafruit sells a really cool "slow flashing LED" which was used for this mod - biased with a 330 Ohm resistor off the 9v - 7805 regulator's Input lead. Thin wires were carefully threaded thru the small hole beneath heatsink.

LED and thin wires are stuck on acrylic with a dab of hot glue and routed near the back corner beneath the Clock.

Lights up the whole room in a pulsing glow of colors… (add a pot to control brightness!)

Can't believe how cool it turned out... that’s how I pimped MY IceClock…

Hey all,

New to the forum & adafruit!

Built, I believe, my first non-musical build. Nice change of pace.

Here it is sitting on 2 of my toys :)

Hey muksys,

I'll bite. What *are* those intriguing boxes your Ice Tube is sitting on?

My son loves his Solder Time watch, but managed to break the case in a fall. I looked for a design file for the case but was not able to find one, so I made one using Corel Draw, and had a new case made using Ponoko. Byron decided he wanted red translucent plastic, and we put his name on it too.

Here is assembly #2 of my Icetube clock. It took a header off of the window sill a couple of months ago. The tube and screws holding the PDB to the base broke. Adafruit provided the replacement pcb end piece and header. Ebay/Russia provided the replacement tubes. All works find after the assembly. Now I just need to replace the two broken nylon screws.

I had a lot of fun building it although I am a soldering neophyte! I even finally learned to use a multimeter.

I finally finished upgrading my clock to to the xmas firmware with a 328p and a gps module.
The only module I could find at that time when I was looking was the adafruit flora gps module but it works just fine. The wires could have been trimmed to eb shorter but I think it adds character and since it fits I don't care enough to mess with it further unless needed.
