$30 I Ain't Ever Gonna See Again...

Post by stinkbutt »

I'm pretty sure I just set fire to $30. I wanted to reprogram the Ice Clock but instead of getting a USBTiny I picked up an Arduino. What was I thinking there? I'm not entirely certain you can credit me with that word: "Thinking."

Actually I'm exaggerating a little bit. I'm sure I can find lots of uses for an Arduino proper, I just don't think now it's what I use for this task, is it? I want to update the firmware on an ATMega168 which means...

Well, I THINK I know what it means now. But I THOUGHT I knew what it meant three days ago when I purchased an Arduino from the nice Lady. Now I think it means I pick up a USBTiny kit, (I could buy a prefabbed programmer, but from what I can tell they're all inferior to the USBTiny whilst being more expensive,) and follow the instructions from the project page.

So here's my question: Is that what I do? Have I left anything out? I'd rather not place a third order for something I've forgotten.

You can use the Arduino as a programmer

Yeah I suppose, but I'm new to this. I'm already trying to learn Arduino, and now programming an ATMega, I'd rather not _also_ try to learn both at once using an Arduino to program another chip. I'd rather figure that out once I'm done with the other two.

And this too. Now I get to buy myself two new shiny things instead of one!

It would be super if Adafruit had a nice ISP shield for sale for the Arduino....OK?....

Too late. Already bought the new toy. Somehow the stock of USBTiny's went from in stock to zero to five in the span of a few hours, and I snapped one up while the getting was good.
