timesquare won't enter "set" mode

Post by AWDouglass »

My young friend soldered the tangerine watch up pretty well but on wake the display blinks about 2/3 of the LEDs twice quickly and goes dark. Immediately pressing the two buttons together does nothing at all. Each of the buttons can wake the watch, so must be connected. I went through and reheated almost all of the joints. I'm pretty sure there were no bridges before we attached the LED panel. Attached are pictures of the board and odd start-up display.

Help please.... Of course I'm hoping/praying the watch's odd behavior suggests a fault in a particular place so we don't have to take it apart! :(

What you describe sounds like a dead battery. It's what mine does when the battery is just about shot.

Could be a bad connection to the battery.

I replaced the battery wath a slightly fresher one and the whole thing went dark (on either battery) :-( No reaction to button presses at all. I resoldered the battery holder as suggested. I do see power at the ICs, though I'm not sure which pins are correct. Could I see a schematic?

The schematic is on the tutorial's Downloads page:

Are you sure you've got the matrix installed the right way around? The part number on the side should be above the 'Set' button

Ah, I think you got it. I have trouble understanding what pinout would allow the display to sort of work. I noticed there are ridges and grooves around the display—for machine assembly?—might be better landmarks for insertion?

I'm ordering the new one. The hour I spent trying to desolder the thing was foolish! Ty for assistance.

P.S. Any advice as to the brightest matrix LED color?

I've only got the Lime kit - it's not very bright. I'd guess that the red or white would be the most visible.
