MDC Auto Advancing Cut Tape Feeder

Post by ktownsend »

I have a bunch of cut tape feeders, but they're kind of a pain for small lightweight parts like 0603 resistors, since they pop out easily when you advance a neighbouring tape, etc. You're much better off putting those in proper reels. The cut tape feeders work great for SOT32, XTALs, etc., though, or ICs on 12mm parts (thin QFNs, etc.) if you also have 12mm feeders.

Isono san (Isozee here on the forum) at MDC sent me this video on youtube showing a prototype of a new auto-advancing mechanism for the cut tape feeders that looks really interesting, since it solves the problem of having to change reels for one-off parts (and purchase reels in the first place), without the hassle of parts falling out since you have to pull the tape back a few components and manually advance the tape, etc. Looks like a great compromise, since most of us can't afford to buy 30-40 8mm reels, but no one wants to be manually advancing tape for 10-20 parts either.

Cool, now if the software could be fixed not to suck, it'd be even better. Oh, wait...
