Hakko fx-888 and lead free solder

Post by majordecibel »

(1) Does the Hakko soldering iron you sell perform well with the lead free solder that you sell, and (2) what temperature would you recommend working with in this case?

If I can clear answers to these questions there will be one less soldering iron in stock.

Thanks!

Yes. It will go up to 480C/896F. I find that about 400C/750F is a good temperature for working with lead-free solder.

Ok, thanks - just wanted to be sure. I'll try one out. I have a smaller weller wp25 that's been having some trouble with the same solder. It claims a 750F fixed temperature, but I'm not sure if that's cutting it.

Even at the ideal temperature, lead-free is fussier to work with than good old 60/40. But an adjustable iron lets you fine tune things and the Hakko has a good deal of headroom above 750F if needed.
