USB/serial backpack modification?

I purchased a USB/serial backpack with 16 x 2 LCD (http://www.adafruit.com/products/784) and am interested in using it with a 40 x 4 vacuum fluorescent display. Right now it does a line feed after 16 characters and only uses the top 2 lines of the display.
Is there any way that I can reprogram the backpack board to use the complete 40 x 4 display?

The firmware sources are on github. The link is on the Tutorial's Downloads page:

It uses the Teensy v1.0 framework.
You'll also need a programmer, such as the USBtinyISP, and you'll have to solder header pins into the 6-pin ICSP pad
