Custom NEO Pixel Strip: Wiring Needs?

Post by thebens »

I'm building a custom light canopy for an upcoming concert and I'd like to find some answers about the limitations and power needs of my WS 2812 NeoPixels running with FadeCandy. Some specs:

5 strands of lights
40 pixels per strand
120 ft length

...To make a 5x40 matrix. Two questions:

1.) Assuming the spacing between NeoPixels is ~3ft what amount of power and distribution should I consider?
2.) Is the spacing issue for the data pin wire that I should look out for? If so, is there a certain gauge I should consider to offset the signal drop?

Thanks so much for the last minute help!
Ben

The NeoPixels act as repeaters, and 3 feet between them should not require anything special. Just use normal 24 gauge hookup wire.
I would power each strand in parallel, and you should be OK.
