Neopixel digital rgb led strip doesn't work

When it is connected (and connected to the Arduino, and the Arduino is running the "strandtest" sample code), it does nothing. When I plug the power in, it sometimes will briefly flicker, but it won't stay on, and it does this whether or not the data input is connected.

I have a 1000μF capacitor connecting the power and the ground, and a 470Ω resistor on the data input.

I have checked that the datastream is connected to the correct side of the strip.

I have tried multiple ports on the arduino, as well as trying a basic code that I wrote myself to see if the strandtest sample code was the issue.

What power supply are you running? It sounds like a software error, but it doesn't hurt to check the voltage from the supply to the breadboard and the breadboard to the strip.

You need a ground between the Mega and the strand. Take a look at the NeoPixel Uber Guide
