I see a lot of university projects that use stewart platforms and it seems in every one the students reinvent the wheel - or in this case, platform - to achieve some other goal. What I mean is they have to build a SP because there's no standard model they can just buy and use for their project. I aim to fix this.

Using an Arduino and Adafruit Motor Shield v2 I'm designing a Stewart Platform that I hope will be both affordable and easy to use. I post it here because Adafruit might like to show what these boards can do. It runs on GCODE that I recently checked into https://github.com/MarginallyClever/GcodeCNCDemo so you know it's open source.
I'd love some help & feedback from you or your students with the forward kinematics. I plan to upgrade this model with some limit switches. Maybe someone out there is designing the $10 encoder I've always wanted.
Thank you!

Nicely done! I'm sure many will find this to be useful. Thanks for posting!

That's good to hear. I'll post another picture when I have the limit switches added in (probably tomorrow) and maybe you can share it with others.

On the subject of $10 encoders, that's something I've always wanted too. An upcoming project for me is to design a simple magnetic encoder based on the Austrian micro devices. They cost about $6 ea in single quantities, the rest is just a simple pcb, a magnet, connector, and a 3d printed housing.

Have you looked at the analog feedback servos? http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_ ... back+servo
Not quite an encoder, but better than running open-loop.

I have. Nice idea. I've gone with limit switches and an optional 9DOF sensor, instead.
