serial-USB/JTAG no longer working

by JakeJake on Mon Jul 09, 2012 8:58 am

I received my BeagleBone and started using it this weekend. The serial-USB/JTAG capability appears to have failed in the first 24 hours.

I can still connect to it with "ssh root@beaglebone.local" and once I eject the USB card from my desktop, I can "ssh root@192.168.7.2", but that is it.

The serial communications worked for a while from multiple computers in my home, i.e. "screen /dev/tty.usbserial-TIVIANA4B 115200" but now they do not. I Google searched all day Sunday looking for a solution and nothing worked. I believe the JTAG/USB chip has failed.

Hi thats a little unusual. If you plug it in to your linux computer, what does your computer's dmesg say?

Plugging the Beaglebone into the USB port of my Ubunut Linux, then booting Linux, here is the dmesg output:

That is my Ubuntu Linux machine. Take a look at line 4 of that output. The Beaglebone is running Angstrom, not Ubuntu:

[ 0.000000] Linux version 3.2.0-23-generic-pae (buildd@palmer) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu4) ) #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 22:19:09 UTC 2012 (Ubuntu 3.2.0-23.36-generic-pae 3.2.14)

I've contacted BeagleBoard.org in TX and they said send it to them, so I have. I'll post back here with their determination when it is available.

OK ! We need to see what shows up -only- when the bone is connected/disconnected. It does appear to find the FTDI (JTAG) chipset. We suggest running dmesg right before and right after plugging in the Bone. Can you post just the -new- lines?
