BeagleBone + WiFi - fail

Post by normlane »

I can't get an inet addr. I've been through the tutorial a couple of times and even upgraded the OS to 6.0. I'm totally unfamiliar with unix incantations and vi but I think I've followed the instructions.

Here's what I get...

root@beaglebone:~# ifconfig wlan0
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:9E:95:9B:55:3F
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

Ok, after looking for other posts on the same subject I see that this isn't too unusual a problem. I tried the dongle on my Windows 7 box and got nada.

Oops. I don't know what happened the first time but I just now was able to log on using it on Windows 7.

It looks like the Beagle bone sees the device. I ran dmesg and found this in the output../.

Much the same problem. I did get it to work exactly once
using test-connman. But only once. Now no go.

For the 'Monoprice' USB2.0 Wireless 802.11N
purchased at ada:

Followed the tutorial at ada.
Wifi didn't work.

reboot

then proceed as follows:

So it works for a short while then just quits.

A reboot will be
needed to get things going again. Also note that the signal
level is quite low even though the BB is in the same room as
the access point and my Kindle Fire shows -45dBm when this
adaptor shows -78dBm at the same point in the room.

So as it is, this adaptor and perhaps some of the related software seems
useless.

we'll take a look at it - this family of wifi adapters worked great for quite a while so not sure what changed lately to make them finicky

Hi, I've been playing around with WiFi too, and I found a weird issue where connman doesn't like auto-connecting if ethernet is also plugged in. Try turning it off, and powering it up with only WiFi connected, see if it works. Would be good to find a real solution to this though.

I do not know what Bob did to get that far (even though I have seen a result with iwlist once).

I have the latest Angstrom (opkg upgrade a couple of hours ago).

I get from dmesg:
...
[ 0.742136] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=8176
[ 0.742158] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

[ 599.690886] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

ifconfig is as posted above without inet
later ifconfig and iw* never return to command line when called; they hang!

connman-test ./get-services returns blank line

no, the ethernet cable is removed and there is a 2000mA support

ok, my fault there was some leftover from the various tries:

mv /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.x

did the trick!

root@beaglebone:~# iwlist wlan0 scanning
wlan0 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: C0:25:06:3B:CA:64
Channel:8
Frequency:2.447 GHz (Channel 8)

[ 454.120763] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

so, still no inet address:
root@beaglebone:~# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any

Retry long limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off

what is missing to get an IP-address via dhcp?

so, all the fields are empty:

Nameservers = [ ]
Favorite = false
Domains.Configuration = [ ]
State = idle
Proxy = { }
Nameservers.Configuration = [ ]
IPv4 = { }
Domains = [ ]

whereas the wired connection has:

Nameservers = [ 192.168.16.99 ]
Favorite = true
Domains.Configuration = [ ]
State = online
Proxy = { Method=direct }
Nameservers.Configuration = [ ]
IPv4 = { Netmask=255.255.255.0 Gateway=192.168.16.99 Method=dhcp Address=192.168.16.117 }
Domains = [ fritz.box ]

But how and where do I have to set this?

after some time and also after reboot (actually the eth-cable was in there, so repeat with USB only):

root@beaglebone:/usr/lib/connman/test# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off

root@beaglebone:/usr/lib/connman/test# iwlist wlan0 scanning
wlan0 No scan results

root@beaglebone:/usr/lib/connman/test# ./get-services
root@beaglebone:/usr/lib/connman/test#

same as before: so sometime it works partially, sometimes not! NO FUN !!!
