USB Powering BBB but Ubuntu not seeing BBB

Hello,

I was attempting to install the mini wifi dongle using the tutorial at http://learn.adafruit.com/beaglebone/wifi

When I ran opkg install linux-firmware-rtl8192cu my beaglebone stopped working at the formatting gnome schemas step of the installation. When I reset the BBB it was still powered via USB but now my computer both in Linux and windows will does not see the BBB. Have you seen this before and is there a fix?

Does the BBB's 'heartbeat' LED still blink, and can you log into the BBB through SSH over a regular network connection?

I am attempting to flash Debian to the BBB now to see if that resolves it. I will get back to you in an hour or so. Thank you for your reply

I flashed Debian onto the BBB. Now I can log in and work with the command line but the tethered networking is not functioning. That is, I can see the BBB from a terminal but I can not download any software on the the BBB. Any thoughts on how to fixed the tethered networking. I'm working on an Ubuntu laptop connected to the BBB via USB. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot the tethered networking?
