USB WiFi for RPi

by strykeroz on Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:16 pm

Hi guys

Since the miniature wifi adapter is listed under beaglebone (https://www.adafruit.com/products/814) but not RPi are there problems using it on the Raspberry Pi? If so, are you considering stocking a USB WiFi adapter to suit RPi?

I've just received my invitation to buy my first RPi so want to grab all the associated goodies to go with it.

Thanks !

we're testing a few wifi dongles/devices with the pi - once we know which one(s) work best, ones we can support and if something we can get to our customers at a great price we'll do our best to get it in the store. no ETA yet on this. we'd really like to have all sorts of things for the pi and we're working hard to design and deliver them ASAP :)

cheers,

Any update Phil?
I just got my Pi and am looking into purchasing a wifi adapter.
Would like a recommendation from you if possible before I splurge for one.

Hi,

For Arduino, you can even go for any USB WiFi chip.

Hi,

For our first two RPi, I ended up using a pair of the RTL8188CUS based Edimax EW-7811UN USB WiFi adapters sourced via Amazon. For some reason the drivers in the standard Linux images haven't caught up yet, but there is a script to make the installation and setup a snap for Raspbian (detailed here). And of course it's the chipset that's supported by the Adafruit Occidentalis distro that I've got to check out just as soon as I get some more blank SD cards.

Cheers ! Geoff
