On the same day, a friend and I both accidentally put a little pressure on the sd card when unplugging something, and "Snap!" went the holder. Fortunately I have a spare, and I'm trying to fix the other one, but this low profile dohicky is a must have in my opinion.

This does look good http://www.adafruit.com/products/966
I've not had a problem with the SD card but have an application where a smaller foot print would be helpful. How much does this card protrude from the Pi Board?
regards,
Colin

the SD adapter PCB sticks out about 2mm and the microsd sticks out another 2-3mm

If you rotate the microSD holder 90º you will save the 2-3mm. And maybe the other 2 extra mm.adafruit wrote:the SD adapter PCB sticks out about 2mm and the microsd sticks out another 2-3mm
There's a cost at insert/remove ease, but I think some people may prefer that.

we decided to go with the method we have - so that the card can be removed easily! but we'll consider the other way if enough people request it.

There's a kickstarter project for a horizontal adapter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/443 ... i?ref=live
Although it looks like the poor (?) guy needs to make about 20x more boards than he originally planned on, so there may be some delay.
I think both versions have their advantages!

I personally like the Adafruit approach, as it can be used with a case. The other one would be difficult to remove without disassembling the case.
If you never need to change, it, I can see the advantages of the other approach.
BTW, I used the Adafruit adapter to fix a broken Pi. The other way wouldn't work, unless you truly never needed to change the card, since it's now glued in!

This is a great little adapter. I don't know why they didn't use a microSD slot on the Pi to begin with, seeing how cramped for space the board is. Besides, microSD flash cards seem to be cheaper and more plentiful than their full-size brethren.

When I asked it was an issue that the micro cards are easier to go missing in a classroom environment.
