Occidentalis v2.0

Postby jhawk » Sun Sep 16, 2012 12:19 pm

I'm confused adafruit made a concious decision to produce it's own distribution "Occidentalis".
However, the highlighted banner requests no "Linux Support" questions. Why would you ask
for support on RasberryPi for a hacked kernel by adafruit? It would seem to writer that perhaps
the most obvious action would be a "Occidentalis" forum for linux questions etc.

Secondly, raspbian updates routinely break Occidentalis. Begging the question is a Occidentalis
repository needed to insure compatability?

I used the last few remaining brain cells to ask this question. So clarification is not possible....

we're not up to 2.0 yet :)

it's v0.2 - Occidentalis v0.2. Rubus occidentalis is the black raspberry
http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-rasp ... s-v0-dot-2

it is derived from Raspbian Wheezy.

we created a distro that many are calling the "batteries included" distro. it "just works" with hardware (like wifi, etc) - any updates to the official distro we add in each version. here's what our current version supports:

Version 0.2 updates (new!)
Truncated image - only 2.6G now to fit on any 4G card
raspi-config notice retained on boot
Removed persistant wlan0 entry
Password-change reminder on login
Added RTC and lm-sensors kernel module
Included kernel modules for: DS1307, AD626 I2C digipots, HMC6352, BMP085, ADS1015
New! Adafruit's PWM/Servo kernel module for easy PWM/Servo control on GPIO#18

Version 0.1 updates (still included)
Updated to Hexxeh firmware
I2C and hardware SPI support
I2C/SPI modules initialized on boot
sshd on boot
ssh keygen on first boot
runs avahi daemon (Bonjour client) and is called raspberrypi.local
Realtek RTL8188CUS wifi support
One wire support on GPIO #4 when loaded

I'm sorry I transposed 0.2 vs 2.0 on version. My point is that rather than a distribution you
are providing a value added kernel. I applaud the effort to make the kernel more responsive
to the requirements of your end users and the products you provide.

It is my belief by reading the coverage of the added value kernel that at least one kernel
modules was created by Adafruit staff as well as a specialized kernel config.

The main distribution being Raspbian available at RaspberryPi.org. While I understand referring
"general" linux questions to RaspberryPi. It is inevitable kernel specific questions will be
asked and Adafruit is the main contact point for such questions. Secondly, the simple act of
doing and update/upgrade could lead to a new kernel/firmware being installed.

My one and only salient statement is the need for a forum to discuss "Occidentalis".
