Downloading Occidentalis 0.2

Post by dsbach »

I've tried to download the image a half dozen times without success. :(
I've tried on several different systems (Linux and OS X).
I dont' seem to lose the connection, but data transfer stops at some point (60MB to 466MB downloaded).
Is there another way to get the image?

it's a direct download from our page (file hosted on amazon s3):

http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-rasp ... s-v0-dot-2

there are thousands of installs/downloads can you try another connection?

we will have it on SD cards soon, but we're working on that!

thanks,

Is there anyone of the tens of thousands out there that would like to set up a BANNED or anything? I've been trying for 2 days to get either 0.1 or 0.2 but I only get between 15 and 490 meg before the transfer just stops. I had no trouble getting the official download via BANNED, and I've written that to the SD card just fine, and I was able to directly download the kernel+modules zip, but I'd really like to use 0.2 with all the sensor drivers, etc.

I will gladly seed a BANNED myself once I get it, and I'd happily buy an SD card with 0.2 already on it if one was available, but I've tried just about every OS/browser combination I have access to and still can't complete a download. And of course once the download hangs I can't restart it - get a 403.

Thanks!

Hello,

I've tried to download Occidentalis 0.2 from this URL in the docs: http://adafruit-raspberry-pi.s3.amazona ... lisv02.zip

and I got this message:

<Error><Code>AccessDenied</Code><Message>Access Denied</Message><RequestId>AB18E6803E96D0C9</RequestId><HostId>d/YQcCBFpXPVun455W4nPaf3wMdOY7VsO0BkYFb4KwmPOFNJqCCG/iOZDpnwgc3b</HostId></Error>

Am I doing something wrong here?

Is Occidentalis avaliable elsewhere?

Yep, I know it well. I've currently got it open in

-- Safari on OS X 10.5
-- Firefox on OS X 10.5
-- Safari on OS X 10.6
-- Firefox on OS 10 10.6
-- Chrome on OS 10 10.6
-- Chrome on Billyware XP
-- Firefox on Billyware XP

and I keep trying each one in sequence. Chrome on XP just hung at 68.1/886 MB. Firefox on XP is next in line.

I also get the same results trying to get 0.1, although I was able to once get almost 500 MB of it earlier today.

Looks like I'll be able to get it with wget. It still hangs, but I can at least resume without starting from scratch. Will still need to see if the final download is OK...

Code: Select all

Well, it took 9 restarts but wget finally succeeded - and the MD5 is right!

I downloaded Occidentalis 0.2 successfully and I can boot from the SD I created but despite following the WiFi instructions and editing the appropriate files I cannot connect to my WiFi network. The USB WiFi dongle I am using (Edimax) works easily with the Raspberry Wheezy distro and Raspbmc distro.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd like to second the request for a BANNED. Adafruit, the BANNED would greatly reduce your bandwidth usage (and therefore, presumably, your bandwidth costs), for at least two reasons: (1) at least some of the downloads would be coming from other peers, rather than from your site; and (2) the BANNED protocol will verify that the file is transmitted correctly--people won't need to be downloading the file over and over again to get it correct.

I tried it twice yesterday--got 750 MB the first time before it canceled, and 866 MB the second time. The second one looked complete, but the sha256sum still wasn't right. I have no idea what you're paying for bandwidth, but that was 1.5 GB pretty much wasted. Even if nobody else were seeding the BANNED (i.e., the download came entirely from you), getting the download right the first time is sure to save you significantly.

Alternatively, you could break it up into multiple .rar files with verification and recovery, or something similar. A direct download of a single ~900MB file, especially over HTTP (even FTP would be better) is just too fragile to be reliable.

I appreciate the work that went into building the distro; it looks great, and I'm looking forward to trying it on the Pi.

I've heard the adage that when you say "somebody ought to...", you need to remember that you're somebody. So, I've tried building a BANNED for Occidentalis 0.2. Here's a link to linuxtracker.org:
http://linuxtracker.org/download.php?id ... rent&key=0

I hope it works; I've never created/uploaded a BANNED before.
