RasPi Set I2C Port Speed

Is there any way to change the speed of the I2C port on a raspberry pi via the Adafruit python code? I have a character LCD connected via an MCP23017, and the update rate is extremely slow. I was hoping it was possible to increase the speed from the default 400KHz to 1MHz or faster. I realize I could probably overclock the pi, but I'm looking for a more elegant solution.
