Resistor and Capacitor

Postby lv_cmj » Mon Dec 03, 2012 9:12 pm

Greetings,

Soon after getting my pi I started tinkering with the gpio. After buying a breadboard, wires, switches, cobbler, etc., I realized that a bunch of the tutorials I was following kept asking for resistors and capacitors. I see adafruit has two products with what appear to be a good bundle of resistors and capacitors:

https://www.adafruit.com/products/441
https://www.adafruit.com/products/442

I did my due diligence and hit wikipedia to try and figure out the difference:
0603 (1608 metric): 1.6 mm × 0.8 mm (0.063 in × 0.031 in). Typical power rating for resistors = 0.1 watt[6]
0805 (2012 metric): 2.0 mm × 1.25 mm (0.079 in × 0.049 in). Typical power rating for resistors = 0.125 watt[6]

It appears that the 0805 is bigger and has a higher power rating.

The breadboard I am using is one I purchased here:
http://adafruit.com/products/239

With all that out of the way, should I get the 0603 or 0805 capacitor and resistor book?

Thanks!

These resistors are surface-mount, which are intended to be soldered on a printed circuit board. They don't have any wires that could be inserted into a breadboard. You should look into getting some through-hole resistors and capacitors. Adafruit sells some 10uF through-hole caps (https://www.adafruit.com/products/753) if that's the value you need, but I don't see any through-hole resistors. You could try a local electronics store for resistors and more caps, or ordering some from another site.

Thank you for the info. I was able to find a Elenco Resistor/Capacitor Combo kit.
