We have not had any problems reported with this product. And it appears to be physically different from the one pictured in that thread.

We don't know what the power draw is, but that thread sounds like an isolated incident with a poorly constructed adapter. we haven't heard of any issues using these adapters and raspberry pi's. If you don't want to plug the adapter into your pi, email support@adafruit and we can arrange a return for full refund!
