So,I have checked out this tutorial and I am using Occidentalis and the i2c and python-smbus files are all up to date and in place. I am not using any breakout board but following tutorial 8 by Simon Monk and have wired it up just like the drawing in that tutorial. I ran the sudo i2cdetect -y 0 and sudo i2cdetect -y 1 commands and both came up with nothing found which I would expect since I don't have a breakout board. I did have the servo wired in per tutorial 8 but was not running the python program when I tried the i2cdetect -y 1 command. I am not sure where to go from here. This tutorial explains how to configure the Pi for i2c: http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-16-c ... pi-for-i2c

OK then, i2c is not relevant to the question. Sorry for the confusion.I am not using any breakout board but following tutorial 8 by Simon Monk
Can you post a clear photo of how you have everything wired up?

I'm not sure how to submit a photo, here is my first attempt. I am hoping these are links to the pictures.

Are you sure you have the cable oriented properly on the Pi? It looks opposite to what is here:

Well, isn't that embarrassing! I wired it up using my Pi Plate proto board and it worked as expected. I guess I put the cobbler together backwards. Are you sure you have the cable oriented properly on the Pi? It looks opposite to what is here:
Thanks so much for your help.
