16x2 Pi Plate

Post by OnionRingMan »

Hey there!
I recently purchases a 16x2 Blue+White LCD plate kit for the pi, only to have it not work. The backlight does not light on by default, but it is displaying the 16 boxes on the top line, but when I type in "sudo i2cdetect -y 0" or "sudo i2cdetect -y 1" it gives me No such file or directory for both. I do have the i2c-tools installed. But I have to say its most likely my own fault, as I accidentally *ahem* melted something by mistake. The Stacking Header took one for the team as I was focused on soldering, and not where my soldering iron was at. Needless to say damage was done, and a single pin does not go in the stacking header. I've attached pictures. I'm not sure if all the pins are necessary for the lcd plate, thus I'm not sure if this is the reason or not. My soldering went a tad rough (paranoia) as it was my first time soldering anything, but I looked up many proper techniques in prep, so I think it should be at least a decent solder job. So, if you could let me know/confirm what you think the problem is. Thanks! Other than that mishap it was really fun to assemble! I hope I can get it to work.

Your soldering looks good and the display looks normal for initial power-up. The backlight is under software control and won't come on until you send the command.
The damaged pin does not appear to be one of the pins required for operation of the shield. So I think you are OK on the hardware front.

The "No such file or directory" error sounds like it is not able to locate the i2cdetect program. Go back over the installation procedure to make sure you have all the software components necessary.

Ah, perfect. Thanks for the response. I didn't look too much into it initially, as I thought it was most likely the missing pin/soldering causing the problem. Turns out I mistyped i2c as ic2 in the modules file. Whoops. Anyways, I think it should work now. Thanks again for your help and not just saying "Its the connection".
