Audio Quality for HDMI to VGA Adaptor

Postby BrianHanifin » Tue Mar 19, 2013 11:33 pm

I have read that the audio quality for the HDMI output on the Raspberry Pi is better than the on board audio output. If that is the case, is the audio quality of the "HDMI to VGA Video + Audio Adapter" better?

I am going to use a Raspberry Pi as a headless Pandora player hooked up to my backyard speakers. Obviously I am not looking for HiFi quality sound, just good sound.

It will sound a bit better because its digital audio with a DAC instead of PWM-analog - its less staticky but its not what we would call "CD quality sound".

Thank you for the honest answer. I guess it will be worth the expense and time to find a compatible USB sound card after all.

Does anyone know how the audio quality of the HDMI to VGA Video + Audio Adapter discussed above compares to the Behringer UCA 202 (http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-UCA202- ... B000KW2YEI)?

Wow! The description says it does not require USB drivers! So according to http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeriphera ... ound_cards "if ... no drivers are needed the interface is almost surely a class compliant device."

As a matter of fact this site says it works with no configuration (except for making it the default audio device). http://jamie.lentin.co.uk/peripherals/b ... r-uca-222/

I couldn't get my HDMI to VGA adapter to work with my monitor and wanted to return it. Then I discovered it was the perfect "fix" for the clicking and popping between songs using Pianobar and the analog output of the Raspberry. Now I'm glad the RMA for the adapter didn't show up!
Now I have nice quiet transitions between songs since the adapter also has stereo output.

I did find another minor problem with the HDMI/VGA adapter. The 3.5mm jack in the adapter was not making proper connection with the audio cable. I was missing one of the audio channels unless the audio plug had a slight amount of pressure applied.

Since I hasn't going to return the adapter, I broke open the case and found the metal connection on the audio jack for the tip of the plug was not making contact with the plug. Using a very small screwdriver, I pushed the metal tab in so it now made good connection with the tip of the audio output plug.
