Modification suggestion for the Raspberry Pi Fritzing header connector

Postby lbsl » Wed Mar 20, 2013 10:44 am

I have used John de Cristofaro's Fritzing part library for creating a Pi shield (Pat on the back from me, he saved me a lot of work already).
John though kept himself pretty limited to the given pins and did not added the DNC pins.

From this post citing a link to a blog and comment:

The original GPIO connector had five pins labelled “do not connect” to provide for possible future additional I/O connections. Now that the 4 new I/O nets actually go to a separate connector, does that mean we can rely on the “DNC” pins on P1 being connected to ground?

Yes (note – 5V and 3V3 for some of the pins).

I understand that the GPIO pin header definitions will not be changed anymore.
For both the Rev 1.0 and Rev 2.0, the schematics are the same, as seems to be the future schematics:

Being able to have multiple ground locations allows more efficient ground connection on the boards.
Hence my suggestion to add the DNC pins to the header as GND connectors. (also the extra 3.3V and 5V pins won't hurt, but i suspect for the 5V it doesn't matter much in alternative routing options)

Cheers.
