Problem Out-of-the-Box

I have not been able to get the Raspberry Pi Computer [ID:1014] going. The red LED light works but nothing else. I followed your programing instruction to load the operating system.

I check the SD card with another unit from a friend. The software runs on his Pi and his SD does nothing with my Pi. I don't know what to do next. I'm using my friend's Pi for now. What should I do with the defective one you sent me?

Which system are you trying to boot? If you are using occidentalis 0.2, please have a look at this post first:

There is a known issue with occidentalis 0.2 and R Pi boards with a Hynix memory chip

If that isn't the problem, please have a look at this troubleshooting page:

Does the green LED appear to be dimly lit?
Try it with nothing plugged in to the pi but the power cable
Try a different power supply and a different USB cable
The troubleshooting page discusses checking the pins in the SD card slot - make sure they are "springy" and not bent or stuck

I had THIS EXACT PROBLEM, and it's a shame the support section directs us here, which is NOT support, but rather like saying "google it and suck it".

My SD card didn't work and after hours of googling and testing I installed the Wheezy myself, which took me another 6 hours, because some OS generators (dd) use a disk image and some a .zip, some .zips have just files inside and some an image… anyway, I spent another 6 hours there.

After 12 hours I got my Raspberry Pi working BUT No computer can reach the Pi in any way[/b]
I still think the support should come from adafruit, but I was told to post it on the Raspberry Pi as if it was unix help, because I know nothing about Unix programming, so here is the No Access Point new post http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 00#p404500

This has always been our support model, and it has been very successful with our customers. No googling or sucking necessary - present your problem and we will do whatever we can to help.

It DOES have internet, but that's a no-setup service so it's kinda easy to guess it must work.

I'm not following you entirely. Can you access the internet from the Pi?

You are using a wifi dongle? Which one? Dongles don't always work well when plugged directly into the Pi's USB port, especially if you have other devices attached to the Pi. Try attaching the dongle through a self-powered USB hub.

Did you buy a pre-loaded SD card? Did you check our Raspberry Pi tutorial - we have a very clear procedure for building a bootable card. http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-rasp ... spberry-pi
Subsequent lessons in the series take you through initial configuration, network setup (including wifi), using a console cable, and configuring ssh and vnc for remote access

TPSI, The best way to start out is to first get the Pi booting and the console cable working. We've had a lot of people build our onion pi kit successfully so we're pretty confident the instructions are complete but there are a lot of them!

to help us help you, please let us know:

a) did you purchase an onion pi kit? if not, what adafruit product IDs are you using for components? there might be differences in usage if they're not the kit parts!
b) does the SD card show up on your home computer? there should be some files on it such as 'config.txt' etc - that would indicate it has the OS burned on it
c) does the console cable create a COM port? you'll need to select the right COM/serial port to use the debugger.
d) if you connect the pi to an HDMI/TV screen to you see any text during boot?

a) Yes. I don't know why Tor is NOT installed in the Pi already.
b) Yes. The corrupt card had them. I saw them when I re-installed the OS (Pi didn't boot with the one shipped)
c) I don't know. I use Mac, and an alert pops up and sends me to the network preferences panel for me to setup a modem, with phone number user and pass. I ignored it since nowhere in the web mentions is for this cable setup UPDATE: IGNORE IT
d) I didn't try connecting the TV too, because i saw the Pi not even booting (leds not flashing, but most lit green)
