Raspberry Pi - defective hardware

Post by mlagasse »

Hi there, I purchased my Raspberry Pi from Adafruit on 1/07/14 and recently have developed problems with it. It often has trouble booting (kernel panics), no longer recognizes any usb devices, and usually the network link does not work. I have swapped out 2 other known good sd cards with fresh installations, 2 other keyboards and 3 other power supplies, all of which I have used with this Pi before so this leads me to believe the issue is with the device itself.

Is it possible to get an exchange? I have always used the case I purchased with it and have done no modifications to the hardware.

Thanks for your time.

That's a bit outside our 30-day replacement window. After that, the odds overwhelmingly favor environmental issues over manufacturing defects.

It sounds like you may have a polyfuse that's getting ready to die. Check the voltage between the test points TP1 (down by the mini-USB power connector) and TP2 (between the GPIO pins and the yellow RCA jack). Also check the voltage between TP2 and either side of the polyfuse F3 on the bottom of the board near the miini-USB jack: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting# ... r_problems

If you see more than about 0.3v across the polyfuse, it's a sign that you may have a noisy power supply. The polyfuse absorbs spikes, but each spike derates it slightly. Over time, the cumulative stress will raise F3's internal resistance to a level that causes problems.
