I have successfully followed your piBeacon tutorial on the Learning system. I'm using your Bluetooth 4.0 dongle (item # 1327) and with the Radius Networks' "Locate" app, my iPhone is able to determine when the Raspberry Pi is in range, and give a fairly good approximation of distance.
So now I'm wondering about "the next step"... using this information to make things happen.
With the piBeacon set up and working, is there any way I can have the Raspberry Pi automatically perform some function, when the iPhone has come within a certain range?

That involves learning to work with the 'bluez' libraries, which is something of a trick because the official website contains approximately bupkis for documentation.
Apparently it's one of those things where the code has been written by corporations like Intel and Nokia, and nobody wants the other guy getting credit for releasing something useful. A bit of digging around led me to this:
