Hello,
some time ago I ordered the Adafruit 16x2 Character LCD Display for my RasperryPi Model A. Now I wanted to play around with it, opened the package and checked the installation guide here.
And I was shocked! Because I didn't read the instructions carfeully before ordering, and now I realized I have to do something like SOLDERING where I have no idea of. I thought the display comes with a cable which I will simply connect to an interface, like I did with the picamera. Sure, the blame is on me!
Ok - after a few minutes I said to myself I can do that. I will buy some soldering utilities and learn how to solder around. But then I realized something else: The guide above shows only how to directly connect the whole LCD stuff to the Raspberry. But I dont want that! I want to connect my LCD display with some sort of cable (10 cm) to the RaspberryPi, in other words: I want to place my LCD somewhere else than the RaspberryPi.
Is there a feasable way to do that? Remember, I don't know nothing about hardware electronics, resistors etc..I would need a basic guideline with simple explanations (Maybe the answer is just: "Buy cable XZY"). If you have any helpful hints, I would be glad!
BR Florian

We have a GPIO extender cable for the Pi that will let you run any pi-plate detached from the Pi: https://www.adafruit.com/products/1337
If you are new to soldering, you should check out our guide before starting.

Many thanks foir the fast answer, but there is this comment about the cable:
So it does not seem useful to me. Thanks for the soldering guide anyway, didn't saw that before!many i2c devices (and especially our 16x2 LCD Plate for Pi) may not work or may work poorly with this cable

Sorry, I forgot that the Pi's i2c bus is not so good at longer distances. If you hunt around, you may be able to find a shorter version.
