is your adaptor 9V AC?
check if it outputs propper 9V AC (not DC)

reboot the x0x in bootload mode
see if there is any visual difference
try to reflash the firmware once or more

open it up
and look for the very big chip labeled ic3
make sure it is seated in the socket well

try powering it up
and then run your fingers over the pads
under the crystal labeled xtl1
it should be right next to the microcontroller

there are full assembly instructions and testing info here
http://ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/fab/seq/index.html

if you want to dig into debugging it
people here will help you out

Thanks everyone for the replys
Guest . i opened it up and the microcontroller is in ok

Brian BANNED e mailed me back and said "I'm sure it's a scrambled microcontroller.
If you have a PC you can interface by USB and re-flash the firmware using the x0xb0x C0ntr0l application."

Ok now heres my next problem and ive tried to do it several times with my other xox, i can open up control and connect to all three of my xox and when i try to update the eprom i get the message that the x0xbox didnt respond and to check its in bootload mode which it is . i knew it would be this Iv tried loads of times to update my other two xox im still on the original firmware i cant get sokkos to work any ideas ?
ive googled and searched this forum for answers to this problem so many times since i got my first xox off andy pledger about a year ago
i think it might be a problem with java ive got the latest version but its the bit about java api and jre files that i dont get

Again thanks for your help guys

make sure the xox is powered on
when it is in bootload mode
otherwise it doesnt go into bootload

ive never used the cOntr0l software
and have heard a lot of people have trouble with it
there is the manual bootload method
http://ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/manual/b ... index.html
its far more complicated
but i have gotten it to work

you might want to check in your device manager
that the device is showing up as a usb->serial converter

for simplicity:
1) x0x power OFF
2) switch to BOOTLOAD mode
3) x0x power ON
4) open up c0ntr0l (do NOT "connect to x0xb0x" )
5) click "Upload Firmware"

when the x0x is running it's firmware - you cannot switch to bootload mode, you have to restart the x0x
while starting, the x0x checks if the FUNC switch is set to BOOTLOAD, and only THEN it actually goes into bootload mode, otherwise it loads up the firmware
