Sorry if this is not the right place for this kind of question, but I couldn´t figure out better place.
I recently came across some news of Geohot accomplishments, and I started wondering how a 17-year high school hacked the iPhone and years later, the BANNED.
I agree Geohot is kind of a genius. But, even he must have to know a few things to be able to reverse engineer those devices.
So, how can someone begin with a device off the shelf and ended up hacking it, without schematics or technical data from the makers? Where does someone start? What is the basic knowledge to begin with reverse engineering ?
Would you shed some light on those question?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Where to start with hardware reverse engineering
I think first you need to have a lot of experience with "forward" engineering in a wide variety of applications.
You can learn a lot from the analysis of the experts in Bunnie's regular “Name That Ware” contest. Andrew “Bunnie” Huang (super-genius) posts a photograph of some electronic circuit and then the readers attempt to guess what “ware” (device) the circuit belongs to.
Some starting points:
