I'm thinking of integrating a SSOP-28 package in my second PCB design.
It would be hand soldered using my Hakko FX-888 soldering iron.
I am a pretty good at soldering DIP stuff - but I've been wondering if it is realistic to think that I would be able to do it?
The chip (the FTDI FT232RL) is not cheap and I won't have any PCBs to test my soldering skills beforehand.
I am also looking for a smaller tip (T18-DL12) for my Hakko for this purpose (I have the default screwdriver tip). Neither Adafruit or Mouser (my regular sources) carry them. Does anybody have a good source for them?
Thanks for your advice.

You don't need a small tip at all. What you really need is flux, lots of flux (paste, pen dispenser...). And some solder braid to get rid of larger amounts of excess solder. Bridged pins are easily taken care of with a clean tip and flux.

Thanks for the tipmadworm_de wrote:You don't need a small tip at all. What you really need is flux, lots of flux (paste, pen dispenser...). And some solder braid to get rid of larger amounts of excess solder. Bridged pins are easily taken care of with a clean tip and flux.
I currently use paste flux I had bought for stained glass (with a smallish brush). Is there any other kind? I've heard of pen dispensers. Are they better?

http://sra-solder.com/product.php/6461/76 I would also check that flux. Leaded glass flux is usually high acid flux. You can get flux for electronics from the guy I linked to or Mouser and Digikey.
